Personal Air Purifiers - Do They Really Work?

OK so you've heard in passing about air purifiers. You know that there are several different kinds, especially personal air purifiers designed to effectively clean air in small spaces such as bedrooms or offices. If you or someone you love suffers from allergies, asthma, or sensitivities to airborne particles, such as dust or mold, you probably want a solution to ease their breathing woes. Most of all, before you spend any unnecessary money, you want to know if these air cleaning devices actually work. Some independent testing has put these air purifiers to the test to see if they are as effective as they claim.
Airfree is just one of the major brand names. They put their products to the test by an independent laboratory with their now-famous "Strawberry Test." If you've ever bought fresh strawberries from the market, it almost seems like they start going bad unless eaten immediately. Well, this test was designed by purchasing strawberries from the same package from the same supermarket, and was exposed to air for a period of 10 days. To control this experiment, the strawberries were hung by a string to prevent contact with any other surfaces, and places in two identical rooms - both 1350 feet, similar sunlight conditions, window location, temperature, and indoor humidity levels. Neither room had air conditioning, all windows remained closed all day long, and the doors were only open long enough for a photographer to take pictures of each strawberry twice per day.
How did the experiment turn out? At the start of the testing, there was no sign of mold on either strawberry. By Day 4, the room without the purifier showed the first signs of visible mold on the strawberry. Meanwhile the strawberry in room with the Airfree air purifier showed no signs of mold or decomposition. By the end of day 10, the strawberry in the control condition (in the room with no purifier) was molded, shriveled, and decomposed almost beyond recognition. In comparison, the strawberry in the test condition had just started to mold and shrivel at Day Nine.
The reason why the strawberry in the test condition remained fresh for many days longer is because of the effectiveness of the air cleaner. It was consistently purifying the air throughout the 10-day experiment. What a powerful visual description to answer the original questions of whether air purifiers work! While this purifier in this demonstration was powerful enough to consistently clean air in a room as large as 1350 feet, be sure to check the spec of any model that you may buy. Some air purifiers are only designed for personal use - and may only be able to work effectively in small rooms (some as small as 500 square feet).
